Correct Vs Incorrect Ways To Fasten Your Horse’s Winter Blanket

With winter right around the corner, horse owners are back to feeding in the dark, adding heaters to the water troughs, and pulling out all the old winter blankets.

One thing that I see often is blankets that are put on incorrectly, and this can cause a safety issue especially if a horse tries to roll and gets tangled up from a slipping blanket.

I’ll admit that I’ve had a few blankets held on by bailing twine a time or two to get through the rest of the year thanks to mischievous horses that I refused to spend another dime on their entertainment. BUT if you do have a new blanket with fully functioning straps, here are some safer ways to fasten your straps.

If you’re not riding your horse in the winter, make sure to take the blankets off on a very regular basis and groom them. Check for rub marks, ribs showing, etc.

A blanket is not a substitute for proper feeding of extra calories in winter, lack of shelter, or an excuse to not groom. It’s an extra for your spoiled baby.

*Don’t forget to make sure your horses is drinking PLENTY of water this winter!
